Every instructor has probably written the word Good job at least once. It is encouraging, positive, and certainly better than saying nothing at all. Yet after reading that comment, a learner is often left with an important question: What exactly did I do well?
The opposite problem happens just as often. A paper returns covered in corrections, comments, and suggestions, leaving the learner overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. While the feedback may be accurate, its sheer volume can make improvement feel impossible. Neither extreme serves learners particularly well.

Comments such as Nice work, Excellent job, or Needs improvement may communicate encouragement, but they rarely explain what learners should continue doing or change next time.
Specific feedback provides evidence.
Instead of writing:
"Good analysis."
Consider:
"Your comparison of the two instructional strategies clearly explained why one approach better supports adult learners. Including evidence from the reading strengthened your conclusion."
The learner now understands exactly which behaviors contributed to success.
The same principle applies to constructive feedback. Rather than saying, This needs work, identify the specific issue and explain how it can be improved. Clear guidance reduces frustration because learners know where to focus their efforts.
Focus on the Learning Objectives
One of the easiest ways to improve feedback is to connect it directly to the learning objectives.
If an assignment was designed to help learners evaluate sources, the feedback should address how effectively they evaluated those sources rather than concentrating primarily on formatting issues. If the objective involved designing a lesson plan, comments should emphasize instructional decisions before discussing minor grammatical errors.
This approach reinforces alignment throughout the course. Learners begin to recognize that assessments, feedback, and learning objectives all work together rather than functioning as unrelated pieces of the course.

One useful approach is asking, "What should this learner keep doing, and what should they do differently next time?" Answering both questions often produces feedback that feels supportive without becoming vague.

Draft submissions, practice activities, peer review, formative assessments, and revision opportunities all encourage learners to apply suggestions while learning is still taking place. This transforms feedback from a postmortem into part of the instructional process.

Technology Can Support Better Feedback
Technology provides instructional designers with numerous ways to deliver meaningful feedback efficiently.
Learning management systems allow instructors to record audio or video comments, annotate assignments directly, use reusable feedback banks, and provide rubric-based evaluations. Automated feedback can also reinforce key concepts during quizzes or practice activities, allowing learners to correct misunderstandings immediately.
Artificial intelligence offers additional possibilities, including generating practice questions, summarizing recurring errors, or helping learners identify patterns in their work.
