Good Course Design Doesn’t Have to Mean a Full Redesign
By this point in the series, we’ve talked about a lot:
- Confusing layouts
- Cognitive overload
- Inconsistent course structures
- Unclear starting points
- Poor flow
- Lack of onboarding
And if you’re reading all of that thinking:
“Well… now I feel like I need to rebuild my whole course.”
Take a breath. You probably don’t.
One of the biggest misconceptions about improving online courses is that meaningful change requires a massive redesign. In reality, some of the most effective improvements are small adjustments that reduce confusion, improve clarity, and make students feel more supported.
Good course design is often less about adding more…
…and more about removing friction.
1. Create a Clear “Start Here” Area
If students enter your course and immediately wonder where to begin, that uncertainty follows them throughout the rest of the course.
A simple “Start Here” module or homepage section can dramatically improve the student experience. This area should briefly explain how the course is organized, where students should go first, and what they should expect moving forward. It does not need to be complicated or lengthy. In fact, shorter and clearer is usually better.
Research on online learner engagement suggests that early clarity and orientation improve student confidence and participation (Bolliger & Halupa, 2018). Students are more likely to engage when they understand the structure of the environment they are entering.
Sometimes the most helpful thing you can say to students is simply:
“Here’s how this course works.”
2. Make This Week’s Work Easy to Find
Students should not have to hunt for assignments.
If readings are in one area, videos are in another, discussions are hidden elsewhere, and assignments are buried under separate tools, students spend unnecessary energy navigating instead of learning.
One of the simplest improvements you can make is organizing each week or module in a consistent sequence. For example, students might always encounter:
- an overview,
- then content,
- then practice,
- then assignments.
The exact structure matters less than the consistency. When students know where to look each week, navigation becomes easier and cognitive load decreases (Sweller et al., 2011).
3. Reduce Navigation Clutter
Many online courses unintentionally overwhelm students with too many menu items, tools, links, and pathways.
From the instructor perspective, these options can feel useful and flexible. From the student perspective, they can feel confusing. When everything is visible, students often struggle to determine what actually matters.
Take a moment to look at your course menu. Are there tools students never use? Duplicate pathways? Old links? Areas that create more questions than answers?
Reducing clutter creates clarity.
This idea connects closely to usability principles in design, where simpler interfaces improve efficiency and reduce frustration (Norman, 2013). Students should spend their time engaging with course material, not decoding the course layout.
4. Use Consistent Naming and Organization
Words matter more than we think.
If one part of your course says “Lessons,” another says “Modules,” and another says “Weekly Content,” students must stop and interpret whether those things are the same or different. That pause may seem small, but repeated moments of uncertainty add up quickly.
Consistency creates predictability, and predictability supports learning. Clear naming conventions and repeated organizational patterns help students focus on content instead of navigation.
This does not mean your course needs to feel rigid or robotic. It simply means students should not have to relearn your organizational system every week.
5. Record a Short Welcome Video
A short welcome video can humanize your course in ways written text sometimes cannot.
Students often feel isolated in online learning environments, especially at the beginning of a semester. Seeing and hearing their instructor helps reduce that distance and creates a stronger sense of connection.
Your video does not need professional production quality. In fact, overly polished videos can sometimes feel less approachable. A simple two-to-three-minute video introducing yourself, explaining how the course works, and encouraging students can make a meaningful difference.
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is presence.
Small Changes Matter More Than You Think
One of the most important ideas in instructional design is that small barriers accumulate.
A confusing menu here. An unclear instruction there. A buried assignment somewhere else. Individually, these may seem minor. Together, they shape how students experience your course.
The good news is that small improvements accumulate too.
A clearer starting point. Better flow. Simpler navigation. More consistent structure. A welcoming tone.
These things matter.
And students notice them.
